About the show

The play follows Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper, through the course of their romantic relationship. Marianne often delights in poetry about cosmology, quantum mechanics, string theory and the belief that multiple universes drive people’s lives in different directions. This idea shapes the play’s structure, with short scenes that repeat, often ending in different ways.

Roland and Marianne meet at a barbecue and begin a relationship. After moving in together, a confession of infidelity leads to their breakup. Later, they reunite at a ballroom dance class, rekindle their relationship and eventually marry. Marianne begins to forget words and has difficulty typing. Her doctor informs her she has a tumour in her frontal lobe and less than a year to live. Ultimately, she resorts to assisted suicide abroad, with Roland by her side. The play closes with a flashback to the scene where they reconnect in the dance class.
