The protagonist of Variations is Proto, a puppet full of marvellous possibilities. Proto knows he is attached to strings and is fully aware that two figures help bring him to life. In this performance, Proto embarks on a deeply personal journey, beginning with his birth and moving through several key stages of his existence. Through his vitality, we explore—with both irony and poetry—timely themes such as technology, fragility and the awareness of who we truly are.

Di Filippo

Remo Di Filippo: With a degree in Theatre History from the University of Bologna (DAMS), Remo trained as an actor during his time at university, studying commedia dell’arte, neutral mask, larval mask, pantomime, voice and movement. He worked as an actor with various Italian theatre companies and, in 2010, was drawn into the world of puppetry after discovering a small, enchanting workshop in the centre of Barcelona: “Casa Taller de Marionetas de Pepe Otal”. In this theatre-workshop, he discovered the nobility of wood and its endless faces—and reconnected with the strings that tied him to his childhood. It was with this sense of wonder that Gino, his first puppet, was born. Since then, his desire to build and explore has only grown—and inevitably, the puppets have multiplied. As part of his puppetry training, Remo studied with Catalan puppeteers Lope De Alberdi and Litus Cuc, as well as with the English master puppeteer Stephen Mottram.
